Hydroponic Nutrients

Just like people can’t live without a proper diet, plants need nutrients to survive. Not to mention that growers want to reap substantial yields from plants. However, when these plants grow hydroponically, they can’t actively absorb those nutrients by themselves. Since they can’t extract nutrients from soil like typical plants, they are completely dependent on the nutrients provided by the grower.

All plants can take in water through the roots. When it comes to nutrient uptake, they absorb the water provided by hydroponic nutrients.

Growers may be used to running to the nearest gardening store to get fertilizers and other nutrients for their plants. Moreover, getting the best hydroponic nutrients on the market isn’t something to take for granted. Just like any other product, there are a vast number of hydroponic nutrient packages in the market. When selecting hydroponic nutrients, one needs to be careful not to waste the hard-earned money on something of little or no value.

What Do Plants Need To Grow?

Plants cover a significant portion of the world; and they’re found everywhere. But sometimes people tend to get puzzled about how these plants grow, and exactly what they need to grow. There are many things which are essential for plant growth. Here are some of these needs:

  • Water and nutrients
  • Air
  • Temperature and light
  • Time and space

Water and Nutrients

Just like human beings and animals, plants need both nutrients (food) and water to grow. They primarily use water for the transportation of moisture and nutrients from the roots to the leaves and other parts of the plant. Plants take water and nutrients through the roots from the soil or hydroponic medium and transport them to the rest of the plant. This explains the reason why people need to water their plants when the soil or hydroponic substrate is dry.

Sierra Natural Science offers farmers the hydroponic nutrients such as vegetation growth supplements and flowering growth supplements, which provide plants with the necessary elements for good health and maximum growth. These nutrients are easy to apply. One only needs to mix them properly and apply them to the plants when watering. The essential elements in Sierra Natural Science hydroponic nutrients include:

  • Nitrogen
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium

Nitrogen is necessary for the plant as it’s responsible for the green pigments in leaves. Phosphorus is vital for making big roots and flowers. Potassium protects the plants from diseases.

Plants can’t grow from nutrients, sunlight, and water alone. They also need healthy soil or soil medium and fresh, clean air. Dirty air can be harmful to plants, thus limiting their ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for the process of photosynthesis. Dirty air is caused by:

  • Smoke
  • Gases
  • Air pollutants

Polluted air also blocks plant stomata, limiting their ability to get sunlight, which is also an essential requirement for a healthy plant growth.

Temperature and Light

Sunlight is vital for healthy plant growth. Light acts as energy for the process of photosynthesis. Insufficient light makes the plants weak and have a “leggy” or spindly look. This results in fewer leaves, stems, fruits and flowers.

Additionally, temperature is an essential consideration for plants. For most plants, warmer daytime temperatures and cooler night-time temperatures are ideal for proper plant health. Temperatures that are too cold will freeze the plants’ enzymes. Temperatures that are too hot may burn them. Every plant has their own desired temperature range. Some plants love warmer weather, while other plants like more moderate temperatures.

Time and Space

Plants don’t just grow in one night. They require time. One needs to have the patience to see their plants grow. Some plants grow faster than others. Some plants will take several months to grow. Some may even take several years to yield flowers and fruits.

Space is yet another requirement that’s vital for healthy plant growth. Both roots and leaves (foliage) require ample room to grow. Without space, plants suffer from:

  • Stunted growth
  • Diseases
  • Plants Death

Not enough space means that light cannot penetrate as effectively to the individual leaves. Overcrowding will cause lower yields due to lack of light. Apart from stunted growth, plants without enough space are more likely to contract diseases due to limited airflow and the inability to properly process available nutrients. This can cause nutrient salt build up that can burn plants and nearly destroy harvests.

What Are Hydroponic Nutrients

Hydroponic nutrients are the additives used in hydroponic systems. Plants need over 16 major elements to grow. These include:

  • Carbon
  • Oxygen
  • Hydrogen
  • Nitrogen

These elements are already available in the water and air. To make hydroponic nutrients, one needs to add at least 12 other elements in a basic hydroponic solution. These elements include:

  • Potassium
  • Phosphorus
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Sulfur
  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Zinc
  • Manganese
  • Boron
  • Sodium
  • Chloride
  • Molybdenum

Perfect grow mix formula is a liquid form that includes all these nutrients and more. One only needs to add it to the water in the hydroponic system in the correct proportions. This makes these nutrients available to the exposed roots. Plants use a minimal amount of energy to “pull” them from the soil and spend significantly more energy on vegetative growth and  fruit and flower production.

Different plants need different nutrients. It’s essential to determine the most vital elements needed by a particular plant in order to choose the best hydroponic nutrient solution.

Types of Hydroponic Nutrients

These natural fertilizer solutions contain the exact amounts of nutrients for particular plants. Since all plants require different nutrients, it’s crucial to determine what nutrients a particular plant needs. Here are the types of hydroponic nutrients fit for most plants:

  • Steiner solution
  • Hoagland solution
  • Premixed solutions

Steiner Solution

With this nutrient solution, users assume that all plants require a universal proportion of nutrients. Once one applies the solution, the plants will be able to absorb the nutrients as long as those nutrients are available. But this one-size-fits-all approach will yield less-than-optimal results. For example, if there is too much nitrogen in a flowering formula, the flowers will be more leafy and fruits and vegetables may not taste as good. Not to mention that overall yields may suffer.

Hoagland Solution

This organic nutrient solution is relatively high in potassium and nitrogen, and it’s particularly well suited for large fruiting plants such as peppers and tomatoes.  This solution works well as a general purpose mixture, but may not be ideal for all types of plants.

Premixed Solutions

Hydroponic hobbyists often use these products to eliminate the need for nutrient ratio calculations. The products are available in both powdered and liquid forms, and they’re relatively cheaper compared to the cost of having to buy the individual elements.

Factors to Consider When Buying Organic Hydroponic Fertilizers

People with hydroponic gardens in their homes, or full-blown hydro farms need hydroponic nutrient solutions alongside other elements such as light and water.  There are various online platforms selling hydroponic fertilizers, and for one to get the best product for the price, they need to be fully aware of their characteristics. When buying hydroponic fertilizers, one should consider the following three factors:

  • Fertilizer formulations
  • Quality
  • pH levels

Fertilizer Formulations

Plants have different needs. One needs to be sure that the hydroponic fertilizer they choose is in line with the growth requirements of their plants. Otherwise, they’ll end up buying the wrong solution, reducing yields and producing poor products and ultimately wasting their money in the long run.

Since there are so many hydroponic solutions on the market, one can either choose to buy the highest quality or a lower quality hydroponic nutrient solution for their plant needs. Generally, you get what you pay for. But SNS products deliver outstanding quality for the price.

pH Levels

pH, or “Potential of Hydrogen” is one of the critical factors to consider when buying hydroponic fertilizer. One has to choose the solution based on the pH requirements of their plants. Choosing a hydroponic solution with an extremely low pH (also known as acidity) will make it difficult for the plants to absorb the required amounts of nutrients. On the other hand, choosing a hydroponic nutrient solution with an extremely high pH (also known as alkalinity) will adversely harm the roots of the plants.

Regarding these requirements, Sierra Natural Science offers farmers hydroponic fertilizers with optimal pH levels, high-quality, fair pricing, and precisely balanced elemental compositions.

Why Use Hydroponic Fertilizers?

Hydroponic fertilizers are essential for any hydroponic grower. Especially if they’re looking to maximize production yields and produce the best possible products in their greenery. The following are some of the reasons to consider:

  • They save space and land requirements
  • They’re water saving
  • Plants use nutrients much more effectively

Can you use soil nutrients in hydroponics?

No. Soil fertilizers are not suitable for hydroponic plants. They don’t always break down and absorb readily into water. Also, soil-specific nutrients take significantly longer to break down and make the elements available to the plant roots. Nutrients made for hydroponic use are fast-acting, completely water soluble, and are made to work with all hydroponic systems include peat, gravel, rockwool, coconut leaves, and tube-based systems. Always make sure water temperatures range between 65 and 75ºF.

How long do hydroponic nutrients last?

It’s highly-recommended to drain and replace nutrients every 7-10 days. Additionally, they need to be topped off with clean water daily. Nutrient strength in hydroponic reservoirs changes with plant nutrients and water consumption. The strength of the nutrients generally run between 800 and 1500 parts per million (ppm). The pH of the nutrient solution changes as plants absorb them, so keeping a close eye on the pH of your solution is critical.

Is an air pump necessary for hydroponics?

Most hydroponics don’t need an air pump. On the other hand, if one is concerned how to control and maintain a nutrient reservoir oxygenation, they can come in handy. This ensures that all the elements that a plant needs to thrive and survive are easily available to the plant’s roots.

Can you use tap water for hydroponics?

Yes, it’s possible. However, it may need to be treated before using it. Many growers  run water with a high ppm through a filter, or mix it in a mixing container to dilute its concentration.

Can you use regular fertilizer for hydroponics?

As long as the fertilizer is completely water soluble, it may be possible. For best results, only nutrients made specifically for hydro systems should be used. This is because normal fertilizers don’t have the essential compounds and micronutrients contained in the purpose-built hydroponic nutrients such as those offered by Sierra Natural Science.
